Bohuslav Fuchs

An architect of modern life. An aesthete of simplicity.

Bohuslav Fuchs (March 24, 1895, Všechovice – September 18, 1972, Brno)

When talking about functionalism, it is impossible not to mention Bohuslav Fuchs. His buildings are a manifesto of a lifestyle — bright, airy, free of ostentation, yet meticulously thought out down to the last detail. Fuchs believed that beauty should be accessible in everyday life, not as decoration, but as a natural part of the space.

He was born in 1895, studied under Jan Kotěra, and quickly became one of the most prominent voices of the emerging modernist movement. His home became Brno — a city he helped shape. The Zeman Café, the Avion Hotel, the municipal baths in Zábrdovice, and the Masaryk Dormitories — all of these buildings carry Fuchs’s signature lightness, functionality, and ability to respond to the needs of the modern person.

Creator of clean lines

Fuchs was not just an architect of buildings. He was an architect of everyday life. In 1932, he founded the company Aka — a brand that united art, craftsmanship, and the concept of the modern household. He designed ceramics, glassware, furniture, and metal accessories. In his creative work, he collaborated with his wife Drahomíra. His style was characterized by simplicity, clean lines, and functionality — but never at the expense of beauty.

He contributed to the design of both utilitarian and decorative objects, including glass sets — often carafes, goblets, or vases — designed in the spirit of functionalism: minimalist, geometric, and elegant. The Aka magazine served as a platform for sharing ideas. It wasn’t just about products, but about a transformation of lifestyle — about a home that is functional, healthy, and at the same time pleasant. Aka influenced an entire generation and became a forerunner of the later Krásná jizba.

Fuchs’s legacy comes to life in Květná

The Květná Glassworks now presents the FUCHS collection. Although Fuchs only explored glass design marginally, his creations speak the same language as his buildings — balance, proportion, and restrained elegance. It is precisely these designs that the Květná glassworks revisits today. The FUCHS collection, created to mark the 130th anniversary of his birth, brings his worldview back to life. A form that is not self-serving. A beauty that has meaning.

In close collaboration with designers and master glassmakers, the original shapes have been sensitively reinterpreted for the present. They preserve Fuchs’s distinctive style, while also meeting modern demands for functionality and quality. In the hand-blown glass of the Fuchs collection, the spirit of an era that valued simplicity, craftsmanship, and timeless design is revived. A return to the roots. A return to the human.
